Derek S. Rocchini Obituary
Derek Scott Rocchini, 26
Singer, Songwriter, Musician
- Derek Scott Rocchini, 26, beloved son of Carol and Richard, loving brother to Lauren and Christina, passed from this world on June 24, 2015.
Derek was a larger than life performer from an early age. At age four, he brought down the house by singing Sinatra's Luck be a Lady in a top hat and tails. He went on to star in numerous theatre productions, culminating in the role of Jean Valjean in the Portland Stage Company's rendition of Les Miserables. At Bates College, Derek delivered over 50 live performances, singlehandedly opening several new music venues on campus.
Derek then moved to Hollywood where he completed two degrees at the Musicians Institute, studying and performing as an independent artist with stars like Jake Simpson and Ty Taylor. There Derek began his life's work, a CD of his original songs soon to be released titled Throw Me a Line, mixed by sound technicians in Louisiana and New Jersey, mastered in Italy, and featuring the top session musicians in the industry.
Derek loved Audubon walks and the Maine coast. He filled the summer skies with kites, and his backyard blooms with the flowers, vegetables and trees he planted.
Derek is an organ donor, and his ashes will be buried in Maine during a family celebration of his life in July.
He is survived by two grandparents; several aunts and uncles; numerous cousins; and too many friends on the east and west coasts to mention, through whom his music will live on.
Derek also loved helping kids, and wanted them to appreciate music most of all. Contributions to Lake House will fund scholarships benefitting impoverished children who, as Derek would have it, will be given hope in the face of despair through mentoring and music education.
