Patricia Sanborn Obituary
Patricia Wilson Sanborn, 91
SIDNEY - Patricia Wilson Sanborn died on Monday, June 15, 2015, at her home. She was born in Portland, on March 24, 1924, the daughter of the late Guy and Marion (Moses) Wilson.
She graduated from Gorham High School and Bates College where she majored in sociology. After college, she worked as a social worker in Connecticut and Colorado.
Patricia returned to Maine and married her beloved husband, Parker Sanborn, in 1951. They farmed in Windham and then moved to Augusta when Parker became the farm manager at the Augusta Mental Health Institute. She, her husband and their three children had many deep and respectful relationships with the staff and patients there.
She and Parker moved to their own dairy farm in Sidney in the late 1950s. Patricia cultivated both community and gardens in her many years on Woodside Farm with her precious family, dear neighbors, strong Percherons and milky Jerseys. She also worked "off the farm" as a social worker for over 30 years at the Augusta Mental Health Institute, now known as Riverview Psychiatric Hospital.
She enjoyed gardening and lawn mowing through her 90th year. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles and play cards. She could turn humble flowers into gorgeous bouquets and simple words into treasured messages. Some of her favorite times were spent attending basketball games at Messalonskee High School. She did not have much use for television, except during the annual basketball tournament coverage when she was glued to the set. She loved to watch her granddaughters and supported them at soccer, volleyball, dance and in everything else.
Patricia was predeceased by her husband and her brother, Hubbard Wilson. She is survived by her son, Wilson Sanborn and his wife Sally Stothoff of Sidney, two daughters: Kate Sanborn of Sidney and Abigail Sanborn and her husband Scott Balcomb of Gorham; four grandchildren: Rose Sanborn of Portland, Theo Balcomb of Washington, D.C., Molly Sanborn of Maui, Hawaii, and Hallie Balcomb of Hagerstown, Md.
The family wishes to thank her dear neighbors, friends and extended family members who provided loving care and support, especially during the past seven months. Special thanks to her angelic neighbor, Winnie Robbins, who cared for Patricia so lovingly. Also to Don and Nancy Robbins who came to keep her company and to read to her.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours or funeral services. She was practically perfect, but found funerals hard to bear. Arrangements are under the direction of Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. Condolences, photos and memories may be shared at www.plummerfh.com

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a local mental health agency to support gardening projects in their half-way houses:
