Edward A. 'Eddie' Stanhope, 71
PORTLAND -- Edward A. 'Eddie' Stanhope, 71, passed away on Wednesday evening, Feb. 5, 2014, at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born in Portland on Nov. 25, 1942, the son of Alan E. and Antoinette Dalfonso Stanhope. He attended Portland schools graduating from Portland High School, class of 1961.
After graduating, Ed joined the U.S. Navy having served from 1961 to 1965 doing three tours of duty at the South Pole with layovers at Christ Church, New Zealand. Ed always remarked how beautiful New Zealand was saying 'It's the most beautiful place on earth.' Ed married the former Judy McCarthy in 1966.
When he returned home from his service he worked for E.G. Foden Company for several years, and then he joined the Portland Fire Department where he proudly served from 1974 until his retirement in 1995.
Shortly after retiring from the fire department he worked for Spurwink Services at Cummings School on Ocean Avenue where he spent 14 years until he fully retired. When some of the students got out of line, they had to help Ed with different chores at the school, which they absolutely loved to do.
He was a communicant of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his father-in-law, Maurice 'Bud' McCarthy. Besides his wife of Portland, he leaves a daughter, Jodi Stanhope Stailing, a son, Edward A. Stanhope Jr. of Portland; two grandsons, Scott Stailing of Portland, Zachary Stanhope of Kennebunk; his brother, David A. and his wife Ponda Stanhope of Old Orchard Beach, a sister, Camilla A. Stanhope Mead and her husband Kevin of Auburn, Ga.; his mother-in-law, Mary McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Prayers will be recited on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at 9:15 a.m., at the funeral home, to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Ocean Avenue, Portland, with the Rev.
