Virginia "Jini" Ansheles, 98
SOUTH PORTLAND - Virginia Yeomans Ansheles died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the home of her daughter Nancy Ansheles and son-in-law Steve Cohen, in Portland.
She was born May 26, 1918, in Newark, and grew up in Maplewood, N.J. A 1941 graduate of Bates College, she taught at Sanford High School, before moving back to New Jersey to teach at Columbia High School, where she also was head of the math department. She obtained a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Seton Hall, where she met her future husband, Robert "Bob" E. Ansheles. They married on Sept. 11, 1948. After time in Burlington, Vt., they moved to Fairfax, Va., the family home for 20-plus years.
Throughout her long and vibrant life, she was dedicated to her Catholic faith, family and others. Most recently, Jini was a devout member of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. Dedication to her family was demonstrated through her loving attention and warmth; ongoing instructions in grammar, math, and manners; and organization of a home with its countless celebrations, holidays, and activities. She consistently provided examples of how to be kind to others and enjoy each day. Jini always had friends of different ages and backgrounds, and was unfailingly polite and helpful to all. She loved a party, a laugh, a beautiful day, horses, dogs and sweets. Her greatest joy was that her children were healthy, happy, and loved and cared for each other.
Jini and Bob enjoyed 20 years of retirement on the Myrtle Beach, S.C., shore, interspersed with frequent travels to see family, friends and myriad points of interest. Their trip to Europe, a 50th wedding anniversary present from their children, was a major highlight of their retirement.
Jini was an active volunteer for many causes throughout her entire life. After her husband died in 2002, Jini moved to South Portland and was able to live independently until six months before her death, when Nancy and Steve lovingly brought her into their home, and all her children continued their visits and tender care, along with assistance from VNA Home Health Hospice, Home Partners and The Girls at Home Care.
Jini is survived by her children, Joan Ansheles, of Arlington, Va.; Carole Ansheles, of Portland; Jill Checkoway and husband Bob, of Freeport; Robert Ansheles Jr. and wife Gail, of Santa Fe, N.M.; Cathy Ansheles and husband Bill O. Stanton, of Santa Fe; Beth Ansheles and partner Don Russell III, of South Portland; and Nancy Ansheles and husband Steve Cohen, of Portland; and grandchildren Abe Checkoway, Jack and Eden Ansheles, and "fate granddaughter" Tu Nguyen. She also is survived by her niece Susan Breen, and nephews Frederic "Chip" and Scott Yeomans and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, Frederic and Celena Yeomans; her husband Bob; and her younger brother and only sibling, Frederic H. "Bud " Yeomans, of Morristown, N.J., and his wife Dorothy "Dot."
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to mom's caregivers, especially Cara, Emily, Theresa, Maddy, Jordan, and Amanda. Without fail, they were exceedingly competent and loving in their care.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, April 21, from 4-7 p.m. at
