Rollande Marie Nielsen, 84
SCARBOROUGH - Rollande Marie Nielsen, 84, passed away on Nov. 27, 2017, with her family by her side.
She was born in Wallagrass, Maine, July 1, 1933, the daughter of Catherine and Joseph Ouellette.
Rollande and her family moved to Ocean Park when she was nine and attended Notre Dame de Lourdes and St. Andre's Catholic Schools.
Rollande spent her teenage years caring for her younger brothers, working at the neighbors' cabins, and spent time with her mother at her parents' store where she met her husband, the late Laurence E. Nielsen. They were married November 22, 1951.
When Rollande and Laurence married, they built their home in Scarborough, where they would raise their four children and live until their final days.
Rollande always had a strong faith and was a catechism teacher for her children and those of local families. She spent endless hours in the yard with her husband enjoying the beautiful flower and vegetable gardens he grew. She worked tirelessly preparing and canning the many vegetables grown to provide for her family throughout the year. Rollande had a great love for the warmth of her fireplace and woodstove and spent a lot of time gathering twigs in her yard for kindling. Neighbors and friends would often see her collecting while using her walker in her later days. Many would fondly refer to her as "Twiggy." She had a smile like no other that would melt your heart. She was extremely loved and will be so very missed by her children and all who knew her.
Rollande is survived by her brother, Bertrand Ouellette, and his wife Claudia, of Saco; son, John, and his wife Nancy, of Baltimore, Md.; son, Mark, and his wife Jeanne, of Lyman; daughter, Laurie Grimmel, and her husband David, of Lewiston; and daughter, Lisa Saulle, her husband Michael and granddaughter Abigail, of Scarborough. She also leaves many stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Catherine Ouellette; her brother, Fernand; her husband, Laurence; and their twin baby boys, Mathew and Luke.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caring staff at The Tyler Suite in Mercy Hospital.
Visiting hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at
