He was born on Nov. 21, 1941, the son of John B. and Catherine A. (Drugan) Staples.

Ray grew up in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from Commerce High School. He attended post-secondary school and enrolled in the United States Coast Guard, where he served for four years.

On Sept. 1, 1967, he married Jean Hannaford and together they moved to Maine where they made their home and raised their family. Ray was employed at Verizon as an equipment installer until his retirement.

Throughout the years, Ray was heavily involved with several local civic organizations, including the Junior Chamber of Commerce, public safety volunteer, Cub Master of the Boy Scouts, and especially the Kiwanis Club of Standish. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Jean Staples, of Standish; a daughter, Elizabeth Brown-Malia, and her husband Peter, of Standish, and children Kevin Brown, Caroline Virginia Northrop, Johnathan Lawrence Malia and Elizabeth Joan Malia; son, Raymond Staples Jr., and his wife Pamela, of Standish, and children Raymond Joseph Staples, Renae Nicole Staples, Nicholas Patrick Staples, Liam Patrick Kelley and Alison Sage Kelley; son, Richard Allen Staples, and his wife Gretchen, and children Jacob William Staples, Broderick Keith Staples, Aiden Michael Staples, and Claira Marie Staples; and a brother, John "Jack" Staples, and his wife Diane, of Massachusetts.

Ray was predeceased by a son, Brian Keith Staples; and two brothers, Charles and Lawrence Staples.
