Nancy L. Perkins, 84
CHINA LAKE - It is with great sorrow that the family of Nancy L. Perkins announces her passing on June 11, 2018, at Bedside Manor in Oakland with her family at her side after a 14 month battle with the debilitating disease of Lewy Body dementia. She was a loving Mom and Nana and we know she is now at peace with her Lord and Savior.
Nancy was born in Portland to Irving and Ethel Pope on Oct. 21, 1933. She graduated from Falmouth High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1951. She continued her education at Boston University and graduated in 3 years to become an R.N.
Nancy began her professional career as a teaching nurse at Maine Medical in Portland in 1955 and after marrying her husband, she followed him in his teaching career, while raising their two sons, living in Foxboro, Mass., Standish and Rockport, Maine. Finally in 1968, she moved to her much loved final home on China Lake. After taking time off to raise her sons, Nancy then worked with her husband for over 20 years running Carroll Perkins Associates where she was a very successful residential real estate broker who was well respected by those who worked with her and knew her. She retired in early 1995 when her beloved husband of 38 years, Carroll F. Perkins, became ill and she lovingly tended to him until he passed in September of 1995 in their China Lake home.
Although saddened by the loss of Carroll, her faith in God, and the love of her family and friends sustained her and she continued to live strongly and build on the great life she had lived with her husband. She loved singing in the choir at the Waterville United Church of Christ and having weekly bridge games with some special friends. She also loved to travel, enjoying many trips to numerous parts of the world whether by plane, train, or cruise. She was fortunate to have some special friends whom she loved very much to travel with. She would also spend every winter at her condo on the beach in Isle of Palms, SC where two other long time family friends also had condos, and she would relish time there with them. She also loved having many of her friends and family members visit her there to enjoy all the beauty of the ocean and charm and history of the south.
Most of all though, her greatest joys were her much loved grandchildren Matthew and Jenna. She took them each on many special camping and other trips throughout Maine. She also loved following the sports her grandson played, especially during his high school years where she never missed a single game. Her devotion was so strong she would even put off her travels south until the basketball season was over.
Nancy is survived by her son Scott of China; her son Gregg and his wife Susan of Fairfield and their children Matthew and Jenna whom she loved so dearly; and many extended family members. Besides her husband Carroll, Nancy was predeceased by her parents and by her sister Elizabeth Haggerty.
The family would like to thank for their loving care the staff at Bedside Manor, the team from MaineGeneral Hospice, and Dr. David Preston, M.D. for the special care he gave Nancy for many years.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 15, starting at 1 p.m. at the Waterville United Church of Christ, 7 Eustis Parkway, Waterville. Private committal services will be held at the Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.
