Marjean Linn Bailey, 87
KENNEBUNKPORT - Marjean Linn Bailey, 87, of Kennebunkport, died peacefully on Nov. 17, 2017, surrounded by her four children, Amadea, Adam, Saskia and Aaron. She died at Huntington Common, in Kennebunk, from complications following a stroke she had suffered in October.
She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Dec. 13, 1929, the daughter of Peter C. and Emily (Harrison) Linn. She grew up in the Pittsburgh area, graduating from Crafton High School. Marjean earned her bachelor's degree from Allegheny College in 1951, and then entered Union Theological Seminary -- but in 1954, life led her in another direction. She took a break from her studies and married John Amedee "Jack" Bailey and began a family.
In the late 1970s, when her children were grown, Marjean went to work doing Christian education at St. Clare's Church in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also returned to seminary to complete her master of divinity and, following Jack's death, she was ordained to the Episcopal priesthood. Her ordination took place in 1982 at St. Clare's.
Her first parish was Christ Church in Andover, Mass., where she served for nearly three years. Then she moved on to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Londonderry, N.H., where she served as rector from 1987 until her retirement in 2003. When she arrived there, it was just a small group of people worshipping without a sanctuary. Under her charismatic and vibrant leadership, the congregation grew dramatically and they built a sanctuary.
Marjean lived an extremely full life. She enjoyed gourmet cooking and loved to entertain her family and her wide circle of friends. She was an accomplished gardener with the greenest of thumbs. She also loved to travel. During her retirement, she immersed herself in the study of the Black Madonna, the divine feminine and the pre-patriarchal goddess tradition. She traveled all over the world, visiting archeological sites and learning about ancient history.
Marjean is survived by her two sons, Adam Bailey, of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.; and Aaron Bailey, of Salem, Mass.; and her two daughters, Amadea Bailey, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Saskia Bailey, of Nashua, N.H.
A memorial service is being planned for the spring of 2018 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Londonderry. Exact date and times will be announced in the spring. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Marjean's Book of Memories page at:
