POCASSET, Mass. - Born in Portland, on Feb. 28, 1930, son of Russell E. and Bertha L. (Shurtleff) Ward, Kenneth graduated from Deering High School in 1948, and joined the Airforce in 1950, successfully completing three distinguished flight schools. In 1956, Ken graduated business school and in 1957, married Shirley C. (Barnard). The couple relocated to Massachusetts, where they were both employed by AT&T, in Boston. Ken later launched Advanced Telephone, in Needham; residing in Quincy, Westfield, Wayland and Sudbury before moving to Cape Cod, where they owned Harbor Lights Restaurant, in Onset. They retired to Florida but ultimately returned to New England. In his youth, Ken made many happy memories camping, sailing, boating, swimming and skiing with family and friends in Portland, Bristol, Harrison, Standish and Windham. As the family historian, Ken's life-long quest recently culminated in completion of the family tree and a celebrated reunion. A true gentleman, Kenneth was a wonderful father and a dear friend, with a keen mind and great sense of humor. In later years Ken enjoyed time with family, travelling, reading, bird watching and sitting by the seashore watching the boats and listening for the trains as they passed by. Kenneth played piano and enjoyed the music of the swing era. He loved to dance and remained active throughout his life: painting, researching and writing, playing cards, taking classes and teaching others. He maintained an interest in politics and current events. He also served on several committees at Cape Cod Senior Residence in Pocasset, Mass., where he enjoyed the loving support of close friends, staff and family.Kenneth is survived by three children: Christine Baptista and her husband, John Moffett of Portland, Marie McFadyen and her husband, Kevin of Plymouth Mass., and Russell Ward and his wife, Lora Aielli of Wildomar, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many wonderful cousins, all of whom he loved, dearly. Kenneth passed peacefully on Nov. 1, 2018. Services will be held at the National Cemetery at Otis AFB in Bourne, Mass. on November 30, at 11 a.m. A celebration of Ken's life to follow (location TBD).
