ARLINGTON, Va. - After a brief illness, Joanne passed away in Arlington, Va., the morning of Jan. 16, 2019. She was born in Portland, July 8, 1946, to Daniel and Genevieve Mardigian, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her sisters, Elaine VanCise of Orlando, Fla. and Sybil Laird (Richard) of Alexandria, Va.; nephew Garrett Williams, niece Anissa Smith (Adam) and their children, Damian and Malcolm.

After graduation from South Portland High School in 1964, she relocated to the Washington, D.C. area to work for the Department of the Navy. Upon retiring in 2001 from the Health Care Financing Administration, she returned to her childhood home in South Portland, where she maintained a part-time position with Home Instead, until late last year. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and co-workers in both the D.C. and Greater Portland areas. A special thanks to her dear friends, Susan Taylor, Wayne Clifford, and Bill Barker for always being there for her.

A celebration of Joanne's life will be held in South Portland at a later date.
