Obituary

PORTLAND - Judith Irene Vickers, 79, of Portland, passed away Dec. 7 after a full life and short illness.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1939, to Eleanor Wilson in Cleveland, Ohio. There, she attended Orange High School and then, Dyke and Spencerian Business School graduating in 1958.

On August 27, 1962, Judy married Robert R. Vickers in Ohio and eventually started their family in San Francisco, Calif. In 1970 a job opportunity enticed them to move to Caribou, Maine where they planned to stay for five years. But the beauty of The County and the warmth of its people, quickly made it home until 1996.

Early in her career, Judy held administrative positions in public relations, manufacturing, architecture and publishing. In Caribou, she became an active community leader as First Universalist Church Jr. Choir Director, Cary Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Chair organizing the annual Outdoor Expo fundraiser and a Facilitator for Drug Council Workshops for Caribou Jr. High. In 1973 based on these contributions and others, Judy was named the State of Maine's "Outstanding Young Woman of America".

In the early 1980s, Judy and Bob bought Cochran's Hallmark Gallery where Judy successfully ran the two stores for over 10 years before retiring.

She enjoyed playing tennis with Bob and their friends, painting, community theater, choral society and skiing with the whole family. One of her biggest passions was cheering for her children and over the past many years, she has been her grandsons' biggest supporter. Judy provided for her family in so many ways, but the ultimate example is the care and love she provided for her mother and then later her husband, Bob, at home over their last months and days.

Judy will be greatly missed by her son Christopher Vickers and his wife Gina and her grandsons Wilson and Carter, her son Anthony Vickers, and her daughter Deborah Vickers and her partner Steve Woitasek. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor Wilson, and husband Robert.

A remembrance gathering is being held with family and friends.
