John C. Hare, 83
CAPE ELIZABETH - John C. Hare, 83, of Cape Elizabeth, died peacefully, with his family by his side, on Feb. 7, 2018, following a short illness.
The son of Chalmer and Verna (Miller) Hare, John was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 6, 1934. A graduate of Cheltenham High School, he attended Lafayette College before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served honorably from 1954-56, guarding air bases in the United Kingdom. After discharge, he spent a career in sales that focused on HVAC systems for a variety of manufacturers. This culminated with the creation of his own company, John C. Hare and Company, in 1984. This business lives on under the ownership of one of his sons.
An avid Red Sox fan, John met his future wife, Priscilla Anderson, on a blind date at Fenway Park in 1962. They married the following year on April 13, 1963. After their honeymoon, the couple moved back to Philadelphia. Following the birth of their second child, John moved his family to Sudbury, Mass., before finally settling in Cape Elizabeth in 1977.
John loved coaching Little League baseball, managing teams both in Sudbury and Cape Elizabeth for over 15 years. Many youngsters developed an enthusiasm and learned how to play baseball as John rotated them through multiple positions over the course of a season.
An avid amateur photographer, he took the greatest pleasure taking pictures of birds and the wildlife of Maine and South Carolina. Other hobbies included golf, and boating on Penobscot Bay. He also enjoyed touring Civil War battlefields and reading history.
John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Priscilla Anderson Hare, of Cape Elizabeth; son, Tim, and daughter-in-law, Janet, of Virginia Beach; son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Karen, of Cape Elizabeth; son, Pete, of South Portland; and four grandchildren, Kevin, Emily, David, and Georgia.
