SCARBOROUGH - Joel Barlow Marsden, affectionately known as Mr. Joel, Dad, and Pops, passed away peacefully on New Year's Day 2019, at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. A gentle soul with kind eyes and a tender heart, Joel was a passionate lover of all things baseball and a fiercely loyal and devoted spouse, father, grandfather and friend. With a zest for life restrained only by physical limitations in later years, Joel loved good music, dancing, great food, volunteering for the Beach to Beacon, serving his church, body surfing at Scarborough Beach, and spending time with his family and friends. Joel was a fixture at Hadlock Field and popular with players and fans. He was born in Springfield, Mass., but a Cape Elizabeth native at heart and lived within steps of Portland Head Light for most of his life. He was a 1958 graduate of Cape Elizabeth High School and earned his bachelor's degree in 1972 from UMPG while working full time and raising a family. Joel was preceded in death by his parents, William Hoyt Marsden and Ruth (Barlow) Marsden; his twin brother, John Hoyt; and his older sister, Anne Beverly. He is survived by his steadfast wife and best friend, Nancy; daughter, Kimberly Jo Stiver and husband, John; son, Kevin McCarthy Marsden, wife, Amanda; and grandson, Nolan Barlow Marsden. Of all Joel's joys, his greatest happiness came from his family and most recently the special connection with his grandson. Visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. The Funeral Service will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church.
