Jane Abigail Phillips Hyde
FALMOUTH - Jane P. Hyde, daughter of Anna R. and Albert J. Phillips, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 11, 2018. She was born in Portland in 1933 and raised in Falmouth. She attended Colby College, and married George Miller Hyde in 1953. George and Jane lived in Falmouth and Cumberland for 47 years, until his passing in 2000.
Jane was a devoted learner, studying art history, music and religion throughout her life, closely following world and national affairs, and reading a broad variety of literature.
A special interest was researching family history in Civil War times, and on the Isles of Shoals. She loved the outdoors and traveling, visiting Fiji, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, England, and France.
Jane made friends everywhere: On trips, in her hometown, and most recently at Ocean View Retirement Community. She was an active and faithful member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Portland her entire life.
Jane gave generously to family and to causes she cared about. She was dearly loved and leaves a huge hole in our hearts.
Jane was predeceased by sisters Martha M. Phillips and Elizabeth P. Field; nephew Bruce Field; and niece Anne Field.
She is survived by her children, Rebecca Gowdy (Marc), Susan Wall, and Andrew Hyde (Margaret); six grandchildren: Benjamin and Stuart Gowdy, Emily and Owen Wall, Robert and David Hyde; brother-in-law, Hal Field; nieces, Dana Foster, Anne Parker, and Cindy Berrill; and nephews, Peter Field and Richard Chadwick Jr.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m., at
Jones, Rich, Barnes Funeral Home
