James Henry Gowen, 91
WESTBROOK - James Henry Gowen, 91, passed away peacefully Sept. 10, 2018. He was born Feb. 16, 1927, Westbrook, Maine, on the family farm. He was the son of the late Henry James and Isabelle Woodman Gowen.
James graduated from Westbrook High School in the class of 1945 after returning from his Navy ship the USS Diamondhead in World War II. After the war he married his high school sweetheart Nancy Lee Meehan and they settled in Westbrook. They celebrated 67 years of marriage in June.
James became a journeyman carpenter and worked for a local builder in Westbrook. He then pursued a career in the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier retiring after 22 years at the age of 60.
James was a loyal member of Highland Lake Congregational Church, Grange #87, and VFW Post 62 Westbrook, Maine. He was a 70-year member of the Masonic Lodge achieving Master Mason.
He enjoyed raising beef cattle on his family farm in Westbrook. He rode and loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He and Nancy were members of the Pine Tree RV Chapter and toured the countryside. He especially loved camping each year at the Fryeburg Fair tending the cows of a family friend.
He enjoyed spending time with family and especially enjoyed weekly dinners with his great-grandchildren.
He leaves behind his wife, Nancy Lee Gowen. Surviving in addition to his wife; daughter, Cheryl G. Goodrich; daughter, Cindy L. Horr; son, Henry J. Gowen; daughter, Christine L. Gowen; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at the Highland Lake Cemetery, 1235 Bridgton Road, Westbrook. Refreshments will be served immediately after at Highland Lake Grange Hall, 87 Hardy Road, Westbrook.
