James Asa Helms Jr., 69
BUFFALO GAP, Texas - James Asa Helms, Jr., 69, died suddenly at his home in Buffalo Gap, Texas, with his dog, Buddy, by his side on March 18, 2018.
Jim was born in Biddeford, to Romayne and James Helms Sr. Jim grew up in Portland and attended local schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1967. He then earned a B.S. at UMO in 1971. At university, he was a member of SAE Fraternity. Jim married Suzanne Burdge in 1971 and they moved to Portland to live, work and raise a family. Jim was a kind and loving father to his sons, James Aaron Helms, currently of Willit's, Calif.; and Ian B. Helms, of Portland. Jim was active in the lives of his sons, attending many baseball, basketball, karate, school and Scouting events.
Jim was a member of Woodfords Church in Portland where he served on several committees and attended worship regularly. Though Jim and Suzanne divorced after 26 years of marriage, they continued to co-parent their sons and were lifelong friends.
Jim's career was varied over the years, primarily in sales and management. He moved to Texas several years ago.
His strong faith sustained him throughout his life. He was active for many years in the sober community and attended AA and OA meetings regularly.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Gregory Helms. He is survived by his sons, James Aaron and Ian; his brother, Mark, of Asheville, N.C., and by several nephews.
A summer memorial service is planned in Maine.

Contributions may be made to support Buddy in his new home. Contact Ian Helms, 182 Ludlow St., Portland, for details.
