Obituary

WESTBROOK - James Alan Richards, 62, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, in Westbrook. He was born in Westbrook on July 1, 1956, the son of William J and Gertrude Louise (Andrews) Richards. James graduated from Westbrook High School in 1975. In 1988 he married the love of his life, Elizabeth J. McDonough. James was a dedicated public servant starting out with the City of Westbrook working in the Westbrook Rescue Unit. He then spent 35 years working for the Portland Police Department as a dispatcher. This was a career that was truly a passion for James. He was always able to be a comforting voice to anyone who may be calling during hard times and also a calming voice to the police officers on patrol. James' interest first and foremost was to be with his family and friends. He also enjoyed relaxing by the lake and during the winter he loved to snow plow. He liked watching and attending sporting events and was intrigued by aviation as he enjoyed watching planes take off and land at the Jetport. He was predeceased by his mother Gertrude (Louise) Richards, and his father William J. Richards. He is survived by his wiife of 30 years, Elizabeth J. Richards; son James A. Richards II, daughter Courtney N. Richards; brother and sister-in-law Ralph and Annette Richards, brother Robert Richards, sister Sharon Curit (all of Westbrook), brother and sister-in-law William and Carol Richards of Gray, brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Tina Richards of New Gloucester, sister Margaret Hood of Portland, sister Debra DiBiase of Lebanon; and many many nieces, nephews, cousins. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Casco Bay Dialysis who provided James with wonderful care and support. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, 2018, from 4 - 7 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
