Kuzma, 80
PORTLAND -- Irene Sophia Kuzma, resident of 27 Back Cove Estates in Portland, passed away at the age of 80 years old in Portland, on Nov. 22, 2010.
Irene Kuzma, the daughter of John and Olga Okolita, and sister of Eugene and Bohdan, was born in Western Ukraine on March 23, 1930.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gregory S. Kuzma; and her children, Marika Kuzma Green and her husband Gerald Sabatino of Portland, Zenia Kuzma Tkacz and her husband Borys Tkacz of Shepardstown, W.Va., Gregory G. Kuzma of Newburyport, Mass., and Marta O. Kuzma of Oslo, Norway.
Irene Kuzma grew up and studied in Innsbruck, Austria after which she arrived in United States in 1949. Irene married Gregory Kuzma shortly after they fell in love at an Engineers Ball in Philadelphia. She went on to be a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker and hostess active in the Ukrainian community within New York City and throughout New Jersey.
Irene was a member of the Ukrainian Women's Society (Soyuz Ukrainok) and active within the charity Children of Chernobyl. She was a food enthusiast and an admirer of Opera and gardening. A resident of Shongum Lake, N.J. for over 30 years, Irene moved to Back Cove Estates with her husband in Portland in 2007 to enjoy retirement.
Irene Kuzma, a practicing and devout Ukrainian Catholic is survived by a loving extended family including her grandchildren, Alex Tkacz, Edith Kuzma, Irena Kuzma, Rebecca Kuzma, Abigail Kuzma; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 7:30-8:30 a.m. on Wednesday Nov. 24, 2010, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. A 9 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Church, 307 Congress St., Portland. Burial will follow at Seaview Cemetery, Rockport.
