H. Lorraine Gordon
Fernandez Williams, 89
SCARBOROUGH - H. Lorraine Gordon Fernandez Williams, 89, of Gorham and Alexander, Maine, died peacefully on Sept. 12, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born on June 23, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, Lorraine was the daughter of Ethlynne and Ronald Gordon, and was later adopted by her stepfather, William Fernandez.
Lorraine grew up in Brookline, Mass., and attended area schools, graduating from the Beaver Country Day School. In 1948, Lorraine married Stanwood R. Williams, a neighbor, and they later became proud parents of two daughters. The family moved to Gorham in 1962, living at 79 Johnson Road for 56 years.
Lorraine is a 1969 Art Education graduate of the University of Southern Maine and held teaching positions at the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf and Cape Elizabeth Schools for over 20 years. During her retirement, Lorraine continued her passion for art education by providing art lessons privately and in several Maine schools.
Lorraine was a talented portrait artist who would frequently gift bereaved families with a portrait of their loved one after their passing. Her paintings and murals hang at Dartmouth's medical school, in the halls of the Barron Center, and in galleries from Kennebunk to Eastport. She was a member of Maine Women in the Arts, the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority, and the National Art Education Association.
Lorraine was an avid traveler, taking many trips throughout the U.S. and abroad with her family. She was an incredible correspondent, memoirist, and poet - self-publishing an illustrated book of her writings.
She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Stanwood R. Williams.
She is survived by her daughters, Cheryl Clark and Lauryl Williams, son-in-laws Robert Clark Jr. and Frank Hazelwood; brother, William Nelson Fernandez; brother-in-law, Charles R. Williams; grandchildren, Erin, Janelle, Greg and Aaron; and great-grandchildren, James, Anna, and Joshua.
