Frances Irene Stuart Smith, 94
BINGHAM - Frances Irene Stuart Smith died May 31, 2018. She was born March 5, 1924.
She grew up in Bingham and graduated from Bingham High School in 1943. She married Sgt. Emmanual Foster Nov. 11, 1943, who was killed in action in The Netherlands in 1944. Frances then attended the School of Photography in New York City and subsequently went to work at the Loring Portrait Studio in Portland. There she met her husband of 55 years, Earle Saunders Smith, who predeceased her in 2001. They were married on Oct. 11, 1946. After living in Portland for more than 30 years, Frances and Earle retired to Pensacola Fla. and Embden Pond, Maine. Upon Earle's death, Frances moved back to Bingham.
Frances was very creative. She was a seamstress and tailor, she upholstered furniture, stenciled, painted, gardened and completed an extensive genealogy of the Laweryson family. She was a Cub Scout 'mother' and a member of the North Deering Congregational Church and the Congregational Church of Bingham. She also volunteered at the Bingham History House.
Frances is survived by her son Stuart Smith and his wife Sylvia, her daughter Beth-Ellen Pennell and her husband Steven; her sister-in-law, Frances Stuart; her five grandchildren, Ligeia and her partner Mindy, Erika, Justin, Harriet, and Elspeth; her great-grandchildren, Erika's children, Tara and Braiden; her neice, Brenda Stuart; her best friend Maxine Blackburn; her best neighbor Diane Spaulding; and her 'just-like-a-daughter', Kathy Holmes and her husband, Gordie.
A graveside service will take place in the fall.
