Dorothy R. Monz, 97
SACO - Dorothy (Rose) Monz died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, at Seal Rock Healthcare in Saco, Maine, after a long and well-lived life. Dorothy was the only child of Fredrick J. Rose and Lillian (Simon) Rose. She was born and grew up in Rahway, N.J., where she was salutatorian of her class at Rahway High School. After high school, she attended business college which led to a career at Merck and Company in Rahway and New York City.
Her sharp intelligence and crackerjack skills quickly got her out of the secretarial pool and into the position of business secretary for George Merck, the president of the company. Her time working for Mr. Merck was an important chapter in her life - one that she reflected upon fondly well into her 90s.
It was while she was at Merck that she met Joseph Monz just as he was about to the leave to serve in the army in WWII. She promised to write to him, and that correspondence bloomed into a loving relationship. They married in 1946 and bought a little Cape Cod house in Scotch Plains, N.J., where they raised their family until they retired to Cedar Glen Lakes in Whiting, N.J., in 1978.
Dot always put her abundant energy into being a loving and supportive spouse and mother. After retiring to Cedar Glen Lakes, she and Joe enjoyed traveling and an active social life. When Joe passed away in 1994, she continued to thrive due to her strong network of friends and the support of her church. In 2009, she moved to Maine to be closer to her family. Because of her good nature and quick wit, Dot made friends wherever she was.
She leaves behind a daughter, Patricia (Monz) Hager and her husband, Richard Hager, of Ocean Park, Maine; and a son, David Monz and his wife, Elizabeth Monz, of North Haven, Conn.; as well as five loving granddaughters: Caitlin Hager of Kennebunk, Maine; Annalee Hager of Portland, Maine; Morgan Monz of Minneapolis, Minn.; Lauren Monz of Boston, Mass.; and Dana Monz of Doylestown, Pa.
A private family service will be held at a later date in New Jersey.
See ya later, Alligator.
