Dorothy E. (Schiavoni) Patten, 91

FALMOUTH - Dorothy E. (Schiavoni) Patten, a long time resident of Merrimac, Mass., died Monday morning at Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, Maine. She was 91.

She was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Haverhill, Mass., daughter of the late James and Sybil (Spencer) Schiavoni.

Dorothy was a well-known and respected news reporter, photographer and editor who began her career as a local correspondent for the Haverhill, Mass. Gazette.

She went on to become the editor of the Merrimac Independent, a local weekly newspaper, writing and editing the news.
From there she became the Lifestyle Editor of the Haverhill Gazette, overseeing the production and development of daily lifestyle pages, a weekly food section and responsibility for three bridal sections and three cookbooks annually.

After leaving the Gazette in 1982, she did feature writing and copy editing for the Haverhill Independent newspaper.
She worked as a news and copy editor for Rockingham County Newspapers in Exeter, N.H., for several years.

In later years, she worked as a freelance feature writer, and publicist, producing promotional brochures, press releases, trade journal articles, slide programs and a public access television program.

Dorothy was predeceased by her sisters, Lucille Deas and Berdina Nation; and her niece, Jane Ariel. She leaves a daughter, Lisa (Nick) Orso, of Portland, Maine; a son, James (Catherine) Patten of Merrimac and Barefooot Bay, Fla.; granddaughters, Elizabeth and Emily Cole; grandsons, Shawn Patten, and wife, Paula, and Joel Patten; six great-grandsons; niece, Mary Lou Teague and nephew, Charles Nation.

Dorothy was laid to rest at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Merimac, Mass., on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018. Arrangements were entrusted to Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, Mass.
