SCARBOROUGH - Donald L. Cropper, 91, of Mulberry Lane died peacefully on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House following a long illness.

Donald was born in Portland, OR on October 28, 1926 the son of the late Garnet L. and Neona V. (Storms) Cropper. At the age of 17, Donald enlisted in the United States Navy. He served for a brief time in the Navy before transferring to the United States Marine Corps where he had a twenty six year career. Don served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam and was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple Heart Award twice.

On December 14, 1969, Donald married the love of his life Joan Grald in Long Island, New York where together they made their home a raised their family.

Following his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1968, Don worked primarily in Security. He held jobs in the Las Vegas Casinos, security at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, and finished his working career with United Airlines Security at JFK Airport in New York, retiring in the mid-eighties.

Don was a proud member of the Chosin Few Marine Corps Association, and the Force Recon Association.

In his spare time Don loved spending time with his family especially his granddaughter Olivia. He was a proud and true patriot who embodied the American Serviceman commitment of protecting and serving his country. You would always see an American Flag proudly displayed in Don's front yard. He will long be remembered as a selfless, quiet, sweet, patriotic, proud American serviceman, husband, father and grandfather.

Donald was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Cropper, and a brother, Walter Cropper. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joan Cropper of Scarborough; a son, Douglas and his wife Stephanie Cropper of Scarborough; a granddaughter, Olivia Cropper of Scarborough; two sisters, Shirley and Charlene Reed.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018, at 11:00am at Maine Veterans Cemetery, 83 Stanley Road, Springvale, Maine. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, ME.
