David Lowell
Doughty, 89
FALMOUTH - David Lowell Doughty, 89, of Falmouth Foreside died peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, following a hard fought battle after brain surgery.
He was born in Portland on Aug. 13, 1929, the youngest of four sons of Alice D. (Koose) and Ralph H. Doughty. David attended the New Hampton School, Falmouth High School, and the University of Maine.
Following in the footsteps of a family steeped in tradition of military service, David joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he served in the "Iron Horsemen" transportation battalion. After the war, he enjoyed a career with the Canada Dry Corporation, where he worked for over 35 years.
Shortly after his military service, David met Mary Malconian on a blind date. They were soon married and recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. David gave back to the community that he loved so much. For over 30 years of his life, he volunteered as a firefighter in Falmouth at the Foreside Fire Company.
A man of keen intellect, David was a voracious reader of history and international relations. This love and appreciation of history and geopolitics were passed on to his three children at the dinner table almost every night.
During weekends in the summer and fall, he relished spending time with his wife and children at the family cottage on Sabbathday Lake in New Gloucester.
Additionally, David owned antique cars and loved attending car shows throughout New England.
In retirement, David spent much of his free time as an avid gardener and bird watcher. His pure enjoyment of gardening, birding, and spending time outside with Mary was infectious for those around them. David was also passionate about his sports teams, especially the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots.
David was predeceased by his brothers, John, Robert, and Moulton. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; his beloved children: Alyce Aldrich and her husband, Caleb, of Wellesley Hills, Mass., John Doughty and his wife, Wendy, of Falmouth Foreside, and David Doughty Jr. of Falmouth Foreside. He was the deeply loved "Papa" by his grandchildren, Caleb Jr., Cole, and Charlotte. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Alice Derderian and her husband, Harry, of Lynnfield, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.
His lifelong commitment to his family and community was underscored by his core values of integrity, trust, and respect which serve as a shining light to his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
