SCARBOROUGH - Charlotte J. Russell, 94, went to her eternal home the morning of Feb. 4, 2019. The daughter of Constance and Nelson Russell, she was born in Vanceboro, and moved to Portland at a young age. She graduated from Deering High School and Westbrook College. She worked as an X-ray technician and later at the Portland Water District in the H.R. Department, from which she retired. She was a long time South Portland resident.

Known for her quick wit and sharp sense of humor, she had numerous lifelong friendships. Many were in a close-knit group of friends known as the "Birthday girls". As a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, she served Him faithfully throughout her lifetime. Charlotte was a state board member of Child Evangelism Fellowship, a 70-year member of the First Baptist Church of Portland and served in many capacities including as a Deaconess, mentor, Missions committee member and in the church library.

Charlotte was a voracious reader, lover of animals, especially cats, enjoyed photography and travel (she completed a world trip in 1977). She was an adventurous spirit who lived life fully.

She was predeceased by her one sister, Shirley Sayre and leaves behind her nephew, Stuart Sayre and his wife, Lynne.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8, 2019 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, with a reception to follow at 11 a.m. at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center. Burial will take place at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland after the reception.
