Barbara Macie "Barb" (Tame) Vargo, 86
WESTBROOK - Barbara Macie "Barb" Tame Vargo, of Westbrook, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018, at Mercy Hospital with her loving family by her side.
Barb was born on Sept. 28, 1931, in Yarmouth. She was the daughter of Margaret (Oliver) Tame Stanley and John M. Tame.
Barb attended Portland schools and met her husband of 62 years, Joseph J. Vargo, when he was stationed in the Army at Fort Williams in Cape Elizabeth. Barb and Joe were married in Pennsylvania on Oct. 30, 1948. The two became known as "Barb & Joe," which was displayed on their vanity plate. Barb raised their four children at their home on 102 Veranda Street, Portland, where they resided for 56 years.
Barb loved to sing and play guitar; she once sang live on the Ken MacKenzie radio show in the late 1940s. Barb loved dancing the Polka and sharing her husband's Czechoslovakian heritage with her family. She enjoyed baking pies for the holidays, collecting Beanie Babies, and catching up with her family and friends on Facebook.
Barb went by "Nana Vargo;" she was a devoted grandmother who never missed a birthday, always gave of herself to support her grandchildren, and was very proud to be a great-grandmother. She adored her cat, "Tooty," who was her best friend.
Barbara is survived by her children, Peggy Malek, Joseph Vargo II, and Cheryl Vargo; brothers, Keith "Brubby" Tame and Donald Stanley; her grandchildren, Kristal Vargo-Ward, Erica Vargo-Divney, Michelle Malek, Tammy Thibodeau-Powell, and Lori Thibodeau; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph; daughter, Donna Jo Vargo; grandson, Joseph J. Vargo III; and brothers, Darryl Tame, Floyd Stanley, and David Stanley.
Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Mercy Hospital for their care, kindness and compassion during her stay.
In lieu of funeral services, a celebration of her life will be held March 3, 2018, from 1-3 p.m. at Moody's Collision Center Hall at 200 Narragansett St., Gorham.
