Arthur C. Butler, 90
CUMBERLAND - Arthur Croxford Butler, 90, of Cumberland, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018, in Portland, after a brief illness.
He was born in Newport, Maine, the son of Sherman L. Butler and Winona Croxford-Butler French.
He was an Army veteran and was honorably discharged in 1948.
After his discharge, he took Jetta E. Seavey of North Yarmouth, who passed away on July 19, 1993, to be his bride. They married in July 1949 and raised five children.
He was a loving, religious, compassionate and fun-loving person who would often look for the opportunity to pull an innocent prank on someone.
He was a hardworking man who worked three jobs to support his family. He was employed at A&P and Burnham and Morrill, where he once brought some of his co-workers home after their shift at 2 a.m. in the morning to slide on the ice-covered hills across the street from our home on Blanchard Road. He went on to work as a transportation supervisor at M.S.A.D. 51 until his retirement.
He enjoyed trains and snow-mobiling, and especially enjoyed friends and family gatherings at camp in Madrid.
He will be sadly missed by his companion of 18 years, Jane McNutt; his two sons, Glen Butler and his wife, Shirley, of North Yarmouth; Robert Butler and his wife, Barbara, of Waltham; and his three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Donna) Gibbons of Old Orchard Beach, Mrs. Bert (Diana) Copp of Cumberland, and Mrs. James (Julie) Vadas of Gray. His family was complete with all his grandchildren, Robert Clough, Julie Clough, Tammy Clough, Jon Clough, Buddy Copp, Dan Butler, David Butler, Melissa Smithwick, Timothy Britting, Nathan Butler and Bethany Galligher; along with 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Walnut Hill Cemetery in North Yarmouth; time and date to be announced. Arrangements are under the care of Wood Funeral Home, 9 Warren St., Fryeburg. Online condolences may be shared with his family at:
