Anna Horne Wingren, 100

CAPE ELIZABETH - Anna Horne Wingren was born Oct. 12, 1916, in South Portland, to Cora and Robert Horne. She passed away Jan. 6, 2017. To celebrate her centennial birthday, she entertained many friends at her Sebago Lake home. She lived her 100 years thinking only about others, and was admired and loved by many.

Anna graduated from South Portland High School and Westbrook Junior College, completing the first Medical Secretary course offered. She married Carl August Wingren in a huge snowstorm in 1941. Their car was hit by a snowplow and they ended up in the hospital holding hands as they did when he died 68 years later.

Anna had a cooking program, "Anna on Weekday" on WCSH-TV from 1959-1969, where she prepared recipes, interviewed celebrities and produced a weekly newsletter. It was during this time that she met and worked with Julia Child to promote the use of scallops in New England.

As president of the Maine Women of Radio and Television, she traveled the country representing her state. She belonged to numerous clubs and church groups in Maine and Florida, and was an avid Red Sox, Celtics and Patriots fan.

She is survived by her children, Ed and Connie; as well as six grandchildren, Beth, Matt, Mike, Lynn, Doug and Meredith; 10 great-grandchildren, Noah, Lincoln, Johanna, Helena, Fin, Colin, Patrick, Daniel, Makayla and Keegan; and several nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends, as well as Toi-Too, her cat.

Her brother, Bud, predeceased her.

A memorial service is planned for the spring. Arrangements are under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, Maine.

Contributions in her name may be made to:
