Martin Joseph Gorham, 47
WESTBROOK - Martin Joseph Gorham, 47, of Westbrook, perished at sea on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.
Martin (Marty or Buckwheat) was born in Portland, on Oct. 19, 1966. He attended South Portland schools and his love of the sea was evident at an early age when he joined the Sea Scouts at 13. His interest with the sea expanded to working on fishing vessels along the coast of Maine.
Marty was a hardworking commercial fisherman for over 30 years. The last 15 years, he worked on the F/V Lydia & Maya as a First Mate and Captain under his lifelong friend Christopher Odlin. Marty was an active outdoorsman; he enjoyed freshwater fishing and hunting. When Marty wasn't working, he could be found at home spending quality time with his family.
A few of his favorite activities included making brownies, his favorite treat, with his wife and daughter, attending his daughter's band concerts, hearing about his stepson Christopher's hockey games, and listening to his stepson Justin's accomplishments from being a recent college graduate.
Marty is survived by his beloved wife of 15 years, Marcia Gorham; beautiful 14-year-old daughter, Callie Gorham; two stepchildren, Christopher and Justin Marston; and his three loyal four-legged companions. Marty was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Elizabeth Gorham and his maternal grandmother, Shirley Newcomb. He is survived by his maternal grandfather, Loring Newcomb of Old Orchard Beach; mother and stepfather, Barbara and James Foster of South Portland, father Michael Gorham of Portland; brother John Gorham of South Portland (partner Catherine and two children, Chris and Tasia), sister Shannon Gorham of Standish (partner Howard Leighton and preceded by nephew Stephen Foster), brother James Foster of Massachusetts (partner Melissa and four children, James, Michael, Daniel and Sophia), brother Greg Foster of Massachusetts, brother Joe Gorham of South Portland (wife Jess and children, Talon and Gage), sister Brianna Whitehouse (husband Jeffrey and son Jackson) of South Portland; and a very large extended family.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 1-4 p.m., at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray St., Portland. Street parking only.
In lieu of flowers, contributions
can be provided to Marcia on behalf of Callie to assist with future
college expenses.
