PALM COAST, Fla. -- Tom Laughlin passed away on Sept. 6, 2013, at Florida Memorial Hospital Ormond Beach hospice.
Tom was born om April 21, 1931, in Portland, the only child of Thomas Albert Laughlin and Marjorie A. O'Brien Laughlin. He attended Portland schools, graduating from Portland High School in 1949 and University of Maine Portland-Gorham (now USM) with a degree in Music. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Korean War.
Tom was a professional musician and the consummate entertainer. In Maine, he worked for Eastern Musical Co., providing band instruments to schools. For several years, he played and sang in a jazz trio with the late Billy Costa and Alex Johns. He also played and sang with many other musicians in the Portland area. While in Florida, he played trombone with various jazz and Dixieland groups, including bands at Cypress Gardens, Boardwalk and Baseball, and Sea World. Ever the entertainer, he played piano, sang and told jokes to the delight of residents at local nursing facilities in Florida.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his first wife, Shirley Higgins Laughlin. He is survived by his loving wife, Phoebe M. Laughlin of Palm Coast, Fla.; son Keith Laughlin and wife Debra Givin of Portland, daughter Karen Laughlin and partner Lisa Dione of Broomfield, Colo., stepson William Johnson and wife Christine of Portland and stepson David Johnson of Windham.
A celebration of Tom's life will be held in Palm Coast, Fla., at a later date.
