PINELLAS PARK, Fla. -- Gordon L. Smith, formerly of Windham, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Suncoast Hospice Center in Florida after a courageous battle with ALS.
Gordon was born on May 27, 1932, in York, the son of Albert and Marguerite Smith. He was a graduate of Falmouth High School, class of 1950. Gordon served his country from 1950 to 1954 in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Japan. He and his wife raised their two children in Falmouth and Windham.
Gordon worked most of his life in the construction industry as a carpenter, foreman, and superintendent working primarily on bridges and concrete construction. He worked for several different companies throughout his career, 18 of those years were at Cianbro Corporation. He spent much of his free time working with family members on projects around their homes; most notably a three year project for his parents at Smith Farm in Falmouth, constructing a nine acre pond with his brothers.
Gordon was predeceased by his father and mother, Albert and Marguerite Smith; and brother, Donald Smith. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Smith of Pinellas Park, Fla.; his brother, Alan Smith and wife Irene of Cumberland; and his sons, Gordon Smith Jr. and wife Leesa of Raymond and Richard Smith and wife Lynne of Advance, N.C. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Keegan of Portland, and Spencer and Logan of Advance, N.C.; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In keeping with Gordon's wishes, there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
