Myers Ph.D., 79
PEAKS ISLAND -- Henry Richard Myers Ph.D., 79, passed away peacefully at his home on Jan. 1, 2013.
Henry grew up in Waterbury Conn.; he studied physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and California Institute of Technology. After earning his doctorate, he worked at Harvard University for several years.
Henry moved to Washington, D.C., during the Kennedy administration, and worked at the State Department Arms Control and Disarmament Agency writing Nuclear Test Ban Treaties. Later on he was a member of the House Interior Committee performing oversight of the NRC.
He married Islander Mary Lavendier in October of 1997.
Henry was dignified and soft-spoken. Till the end of his life he was a Citizen Watchdog, championing nuclear safety and deeply committed to honesty and transparency in government. He enjoyed sailing and skiing, breakfasts at Becky's and Moody's Diner, and his office on Union Wharf...where he researched and wrote about current events for his internet publication Casco Bay Observer.
He is survived by his loving wife Mary; his sisters and brothers- in-law, Carole and Gordon Talley of Cambridge, Mass., John and Jane Lavendier, and Vincent Lavendier of Cape Cod, Mass.; many cousins; and appreciative nieces and nephews.
A Quaker memorial service will be held at The Friends Meeting House, 1837 Forest Ave., Portland, on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. The Meetinghouse will be open at 1 p.m. to receive visitors. A private burial will be held in the spring. Care for Henry and his family has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.
Henry was cherished by his wife and his many friends, and he will be very sadly missed.
