McCauley Gagnon, 93
GORHAM -- Edna Martha McCauley Gagnon, 93, of North Gorham Road died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at a Westbrook healthcare facility.
She was born in New Gloucester, a daughter of Charles A. and Hattie R. (Searles) McCauley. Edna attended Gorham Schools and graduated in 1936 from Gorham High School.
She worked at the former Pownal State School where she met her husband, Roger. They were married in 1942 and shared 57 years of marriage until his death in 1999.
Upon her husband's return from the war in 1944, they moved to their home in the White Rock area of Gorham. In 1947, their daughter, Brenda, was born and raised there.
For several years they ran Gagnon's Variety Store in White Rock. Edna also worked for the former LaFond's clothing store in Westbrook and the American Bible Society from which she retired.
She was a 75+ year member of the White Rock Grange, Charter member of the White Rock Community Club, White Rock Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Friendship Club, Windham/White Rock Extension and a member of the Gorham Historical Society.
Edna was a member of the White Rock Free Baptist Church for many years where she held various offices and taught Sunday school.
After their retirement, Edna and Roger enjoyed traveling with their friends on bus tours as well as escorting several tours. She also enjoyed time at their camp on Watchic Lake, entertaining her many friends and relatives.
During Gorham's 250th Anniversary Celebration, Edna and Roger served as White Rock's Chairmen of Activities. The last activity for the yearlong celebration was the planting and lighting of the Christmas Tree at the White Rock Community Club which continues to be an annual event.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roger and sisters, Mildred Dunlap and Madeline Hayden.
Edna is survived by her daughter, Brenda R. Gherardi and her husband, George of Gorham; her granddaughter, Sally Ann Hatch and her husband, Tim of Standish; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Ann Hatch of Standish; two sisters, Elsie Graffam and her husband, Elmer of Westbrook and Edith McCauley of Gorham. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at the White Rock Free Baptist Church, 300 Sebago Lake Road, Gorham. Burial will follow at the White Rock Cemetery, Gorham.
