STANDISH -- Eric Richard DeSantis, 29, of Standish, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 13, 2012. He was born in London, Ontario on April 22, 1983, the youngest son of Gail (McCubrey) and John DeSantis. Eric attended school in Cape Elizabeth, Carrabassett Valley Academy, and the University of Maine, Orono.
Eric loved and excelled in all outdoor sports. He began skiing with his family at age three and by seven saved his money to buy his first snowboard. Within a few months he was riding from the top of Sugarloaf. He went on to become a national champion snowboarder, winning five national competitions in slalom and giant slalom. He also competed in France at 'Junior Worlds' placing 11th. His motto before every race was 'go fast and kick butt.'
Eric competed year round in sports, his love of competition found him competing in mountain biking during his off season. He was successful in all sports, and won the State Mountain Bike championship. During the summer Eric would be known to participate in wake Boarding and slalom skiing at Sebego Lake. Sports were Eric's passion, however his family was the root of his being and he loved spending time with them all.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
Eric had a special love of animals, especially his dogs, Baxter and Tacoma.
Throughout his life, Eric enjoyed spending time at camp with his family. He enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, and fishing with his father and grandfather with whom he had a very special relationship. Eric's hobbies included creative landscaping, photography, art and wood carving.
Eric is survived by his parents, Gail and John DeSantis of Standish; brother Brenton DeSantis of Augusta; grandparents, Richard and Thelma McCubrey of Orono; uncle Richard McCubrey and his wife Raylene of Grottoes, Va., aunt Heather Grubb and her husband Carl of Gray, uncle Patrick and his wife Joan of Worcester, Mass., uncle Anthony DeSantis of Paxton, Mass., uncle Arthur DeSantis and his wife Mary Ellen of Worcester, Mass.; as well as many cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at Woodford's Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland.
