Robert L. Day, 62
WESTBROOK -- Robert L. 'Bob' Day passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on June 21, 2012 after a long illness. He was born August 18, 1949 in Westbrook, a son of True and Helen (Babb) Day, the third of five children.
After graduating from Westbrook High School in 1967, Bob joined the Navy where he served in Danang, Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 as an engine mechanic on a riverboat. When his boat was struck by a mine he was one of four survivors out of 12 men and was honorably discharged for medical reasons.
Bob returned from Vietnam and met his future wife of 41 years, Pauline Henri, in Westbrook. Bob's decades of diligent work at S.D. Warren earned him membership in the '40 Year Club' and he was a generous, beloved member of the community.
When Bob wasn't working 'extras' at the mill, he was devoted to his family. Bob loved golfing, watching his kids' sports, eating out at dinner, taking vacations to Disney World, grilling out, fishing and taking motorcycle rides. He also enjoyed making birdhouses and giving many of them to friends and neighbors as gifts.
In later years Bob loved spending time with his grandchildren. Dispensing Hoodsie cups and making lively conversation was his specialty. He was able to take his dream vacation to Disney World two years ago with his entire family and grandchildren. His favorite place to be was at Portland Headlight in his truck having a Cuban cigar with a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee.
He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Richard Day and Roger Day. Bob is survived by his wife Pauline (Henri) Day; daughter, Allison Curran, two sons, Kevin Day and his wife Kristen, and Brian Day; grandchildren, Aiden, Audrey and Karly Day, Julia and Daniel Curran; brother, True Day, Jr. and his wife Bertha, sister, Martha Hohorst and her husband Michael.
The family wants to express their appreciation to VNA Home Health Hospice for their compassionate care over the last few months.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at St. Patrick's Church, 1342 Congress St. Portland. Arrangements are by A.T. Hutchins, LLC, Portland. To offer words of Condolence to the family, sign a guest book and share memories, go to the obituary page at
