William W. 'Bill' McGary, 73
SCARBOROUGH -- William W. 'Bill' McGary, 73, of Willowood Lane, died peacefully on May 25, 2012, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born in Houlton on May 27, 1938, the son of Floyd and Phyllis Kinney McGary. He was a graduate of Houlton High School in 1956, received his teaching degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle and later attended Ricker College in Houlton for two more years.
Bill proudly served in the United States Army for two years after high school, then later was called back to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. Prior to that, he married Sharon Estabrook on Sept. 9, 1961.
Bill taught Junior High School Math for over 25 years in the Caribou School Department. He was on the Board of Directors for both the Maine and National Education Associations, and served as the MEA President. After his retirement from teaching, he served as Uniserv Director of the Maine Education Association for Aroostook County.
Golf was a huge part of Bill's life and he served as golf pro for the Caribou Country Club, as well as assistant and club manager at Aroostook Valley Country Club throughout his teaching career. After moving to southern Maine, he worked at Purpoodock Country Club in Cape Elizabeth.
He had coached various sports teams in the Caribou area for many years, and continued that by coaching the Cape Elizabeth golf team for the past few years. Above all of his accomplishments, being a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather were most important to him.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Sharon McGary of Scarborough; his daughter, Stacie Lizotte and husband Darren of Scarborough, his son, Darren McGary and wife Tracy of Buxton; a brother, Robert McGary of New Hampshire; an aunt, Shirley Roach of Wells; and three grandchildren, Zander, Cam and Tia.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kennebunk. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 4 p.m. at Holy Cross. Arrangements by Watson, Neal & York Funeral Home. Condolences my be expressed at: www.wnyfuneralhome.com.
