PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Abraham Elowitch, 93, died on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. Born in Portland on July 22, 1917, he is the son of the late Sam Elowitch and Lillian Glovsky Elowitch. He ran the family company business, Maine Rubber International and Yudy's Tire Company for 45 years. He was the patriarch of the family, as his parents died at an early age leaving two brothers, Julius (Yudy) Elowitch and Maurice Elowitch, and three sisters, Rose Joachim, Bertha Murinson and Dorothy Potter, all of whom predeceased him. Along with his brother Yudy, he provided financial help for all of them.
He cared for his wife, Rose, who suffered with multiple scelorsis most of her married life. As such he was president of the Maine M. S. Society for many years. He attended Portland High School and was president of his junior class. During that period he won a national award for citizenship from Mu Sigma Fraternity. He was an avid member of the debating team and won awards for that.
He later moved to New York and attended Brooklyn night school while working during the day. He then returned to Maine to run the family business. He was an avid golfer and tennis player, but his major avocation was bridge in which he achieved a life master's rating. He was loved by everybody for his kindness and philanthropy. He was truly a gentleman.
