John M. 'Butch' Richards Jr., 60 PORTLAND -- John M. 'Butch' Richards Jr., 60, of Portland, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Aug. 7, 2009, following a long illness. John was born in Portland on Aug. 1, 1949, the son of John and Florence Calvert Richards and was educated in Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1968. He served a short time with the U.S. Marines and after returning home, he worked with his father on new home construction and had worked in that vocation up until 1999 when he was forced to retire due to a fall. He later worked as a cab driver for ABC cab company. Butch was a member of the V.F.W. in South Portland and was among the most avid Red Sox fans in Maine. In his younger years, he coached little league and was a family man at heart, which was demonstrated by his standing invitation for a barbecue each and every Saturday evening at his home for members of his entire family. John was predeceased by his mother and father and nephew, Michael Carlow. John is survived by his loving companion of 29 years, Barbara Davis; one daughter, Michelle Rollins and husband Andy of Windham; two-step-daughters, Lisa Hughes and husband Michael of Limington and Stephanie Bower and companion Bryan Gagne of South Portland; four sisters, Elizabeth Carlow and husband Herb of Hodgdon, Deborah Levesque and husband Mark of Naperville, Ill., Veronica Richards and husband, David Boyce of Littleton, Colo., and Rebecca Fontaine and companion Tommy Otto of Staten Island, N.Y. He is also survived by Billy Calvert of Waterboro, a 'special cousin' and ten grandchildren, Ariana, Elizabeth and Marinna Rollins, Davis, Noah, Will and Abigail Hughes, Brianna and Steven Bower and Nycholas Gagne. The family wishes to invite you to a celebration of John's life on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Visitation time is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 12 p.m., at the chapel of Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., in Portland.
