PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Daniel Richard Pray, 90, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2014.
Dan was born in Quincy, Mass., the son of Anna and Frank Pray. His two siblings, Jane and Francis, predeceased him. He spent his youth at Wollaston Beach, vacationing in Scituate and on Cape Cod with his family. After graduating from Quincy High School, he went into the Army where he served time in France and England during WWII.
Dan resided in South Portland for 35 years, where he worked as a sales and branch manager for GE Supply Company. At the age of 58, he relocated to Florida and finished his career with Allied Electric.
Dan's hobbies included building model ships, repairing and refurbishing clocks, and collecting stamps. In his free time, he was an avid reader. Maine summers were spent at the beach or at the family camp on Watchic Lake. In later years, Dan was known to enjoy a game of chance at a local casino.
Dan was devoted to his Catholic faith. He donated his time and resources to many organizations over the years. While living in South Portland, he served on the board of the Holy Cross Credit Union, taught religious education classes at Holy Cross Church, and was active in the Small School PTA. In Jupiter, Fla., he volunteered at the local food bank and supported a local school by providing clothes for the children.
Dan was a loving father and husband. He was known to employees, friends and family as a generous, kind and hardworking man with a unique sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Lavender Pray; daughters Mary Pray (John) Anderson of Houston, Texas, and Jane Pray (Arthur) Bakke of South Portland, sons Daniel G. (Nubia) Pray of Winston Salem, N.C., and Gregory Thomas (Dianne) Pray of Orangevale, Calif.; grandchildren Luke and David Anderson, Kirsten Bakke, Natalie and Kelly Pray; and great-grandchild, Jacob Henry Anderson. Daniel was predeceased by his first wife, Theresa M. Pray who passed in 2003; and son, James Vincent Pray who passed in 1982.
A funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of St. Ignatius Loyola, 9999 N. Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at 11 a.m. A burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery of South Portland at a later date.
