WINDHAM -- Nancy May Hawkes, 77, of Windham and Gorham, died July 18, 2014 at Gosnell House in Scarborough with her loving family at her side.
She was born in Portland, the only child of Robert and Florence LaPierre Powers. She graduated from Deering High School and worked briefly at Union Mutual before her marriage. She was deeply loved by her five children, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
She was an avid follower of the Cleveland Indians and traveled with her husband to many spring training sessions in Winterhaven, Fla., where they created lifelong friendships. Nancy enjoyed technology, embracing social media to keep in touch with her grandchildren and even mastering Ebay. Nancy also loved knitting, especially with her good friend Carol LaMontagne and her daughter Debra.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John Thomas Hawkes; and her five children, Debra Hawkes Brown, her husband, James and daughters, Shannon and Sarah of Windham, Robert Hawkes, his two sons, Jeff and Derek of Gorham, Pamela Hawkes and her children, Nicole and Gregory of Windham, Theresa Hawkes LaMontagne, her husband, Fred and children, James, Elizabeth and Lucas of Gorham, and John Hawkes II of Windham. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Alyvia, and Natalie.
Visiting hours will be held at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church, 299 Main Street, Gorham. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Gorham.
