Donald E. 'Don' Vance, 81

WINDHAM -- Donald E. Vance, 81, went peacefully into the arms of his heavenly father surrounded by his family, on Saturday, June 28, 2014. He was born in Portland on Sept. 6, 1932, the son of John and Sylvia (Goodwin) Vance. Don grew up in Portland where he attended Deering High School and worked with his father contracting. He would go on to operate his own excavating company D & J Excavating, for over 50 years.
Don was a member of the Windham Drifters Snowmobile Club and enjoyed operating anything with a motor, especial motor cycles and boats.
He will be remembered as a fun loving, vocal man, that always had a hug for the girls.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his son, Donald E. Vance Jr.; and sister, Dorothy Vance. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Joanne (Lawrence) Vance; son David Vance and his wife Judy of Windham, daughters, Julie Pennell and her husband Wayne Sr. of Windham, and Susan Vance and her significant other Forest Lamb of Windham; siblings, John Vance and his wife Joan of Portland, Raymond Vance and his wife Gerry of Windham, Gladys Goan and her husband Richard of Westbrook, Thomas Vance and his wife Ann of Portland, Ralph Vance and his wife Diane of Windham, Sylvia Axelson and her husband Mel of South Portland, and Eugene Vance and his wife Linda of Princeton; grandchildren, Wayne Pennell Jr. and his significant other Ashley, Jenessa Feeney and her husband John, Jenelle Vance and her Fiance Ben, and Kaila Pennell and her Significant other Bill; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Codie, Julia, Levi, and Christopher; sister-in-law, Jeanne Emmons and her husband Dick; and many nieces and nephews.
Don's family would like to thank his caregiver's, from Home Instead, Mel Tukey, Gloria Sheenan, Deb McLeod, and Darla; the Maine Centers for Health staff especially Mary Palmer, the families long term doctor M.C. Hothem D.O.; and the nurses at VNA Hospice, and a very special thanks to John Berry.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 11, with a time of visitation from 12:30-2 p.m., at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery, North Windham. A reception will follow at the Windham Veterans Center. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.dolbyfuneralchapel.com.
