SCARBOROUGH -- Phyllis Ruth Locke passed away on June 19, 2014, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice of Maine.
Phyllis was born in Kingston on Thames, England in 1928, to J. Wesley Bready Ph.D., and Edna Ruth Flack. Her father was a minister, an author and lecturer on social and democratic reformers. Her mother studied law and became a reading specialist for dyslexic children. The family immigrated to Canada in 1939.
Phyllis graduated in 1952 from University of Toronto, Victoria College, with B.A. Honors English. She studied under Northrop Frye, a William Blake scholar. For summer employment through college Phyllis worked on the steam ship SS Kingston. While working on Lake Ontario she met her husband Roy H. Locke.
They were wed in 1952 in Toronto. His profession as a sea captain took them to Portland. Roy and Phyllis first settled in South Portland then moved to Cape Elizabeth in 1968. In 1976 Phyllis became a U.S. citizen.
For many years Phyllis was a book seller. After graduating with a master's degree in library science, she began a 30 year career as a reference librarian for the University of Southern Maine. Her best library years were assisting all corners with their research, teaching classes in library usage, and training student assistants. She earned a second master's degree in English literature and wrote her thesis on Andrew Marvell a 17th century poet.
Phyllis never completely retired. She returned to the reference desk as a volunteer and taught English as a second language.
Her hometown affiliations were as a volunteer proof reader for Cape Courier, a member of Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church, she was active in outreach for woman leaving prison. Her memberships included Maine Education Association., University of Maine Professional Staff Association, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. She was a dedicated member of the College Club of Portland, an organization which provides scholarships for women.
Phyllis was always curious and a lifelong learner. She had an addiction to the printed word, especially in verse and was always generous to a 'variety of good causes.' She was a lifelong learner, traveler, a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother.
Her husband of 54 years, Roy Locke died in 2006. Phyllis is survived by her daughter Pat Locke Esq. and son-in-law Tom Mascetta of Lincoln, and granddaughter Katie Maeve Mascetta of Boston; and her daughter Susan Locke Rubens, son-in-law Jim Rubens and grandson Matthew of Etna, N.H.
