BIDDEFORD -- Joseph John Murphy, 102 years young, of Mountain Road in Biddeford, died peacefully on May 29, 2014, at home.
He was born on Jan. 29, 1912, in Lowell, Mass., the son of Joseph and Mary Ellen (Cassidy) Murphy and graduated from Lowell High School.
Mr. Murphy worked at different shoe factories in Lowell and in Maine for many years, retiring from Nike in 1985 as a master shoe designer.
He married his sweetheart, Elizabeth G. McNally in 1941 and together they raised their children, moving to Maine in 1952.
Mr. Murphy enlisted in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He was very proud of his service to his country.
He enjoyed many activities during his long life, including fishing and hunting, gardening, ballroom dancing, ice skating, a life-long love of horses, and he was also an artist, painting with many different mediums.
He was a member of the Saco River Salmon Club, the Portland Ice Skating Club, the American Ballroom Dance Academy in Portland and was a member of the choir at St. Mary's Church in Biddeford for many years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth G. (McNally) Murphy in 2000; as well as his brother, Thomas Murphy and two sisters, Marion Oreo and Doris Kershaw. Survivors include his son, Joseph D. Murphy and his wife Cathleen of Scarborough, daughters, Sharon Murphy Daszkiewicz of Portland, and Sheila Mathieu and her husband David of Portland; a sister, Eileen Malsch of Sandy Hook, Conn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Thursday, June 5, 2014, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Parish - St. Martha's Church, Portland Road, Kennebunk. Interment at Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, Kennebunk.
