Gertrude 'Trudy' Kanter, 80
YARMOUTH -- Gertrude (Trudy) Ellen Kanter, 80, of Cumberland Foreside, died on Jan. 6, 2013.
She was born on July 19, 1932, in Winthrop, the daughter of Alfred and Mary Jane Elizabeth (Pettengill) Hopkinson. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Winthrop High School, Class of 1950. She became an excellent bridge and cribbage player, enjoyed knitting any number of things for her family (especially her grandchildren for whom she had a great love) and homemaker.
Through the years Trudy worked in various administration functions with different companies. After her two daughters were grown and on their own, her life took on a more adventurous turn when she was invited by her brother to come to Alaska. She found work on the Alaska Pipeline as a Quality Control Clerk and while on an assignment to an outlying camp she met field engineer, Gary Kanter. The rest is history - 35 years' worth with 18 moves to places such as Japan, China, United Arab Emirates, Scotland and England to name a few.
Trudy had an easy and engaging way that allowed her to make friends in any country or culture they found themselves. She invited people into her life and them into theirs. Her warmth and gorgeous smile made her a natural ambassador as a beautiful American. She gave of her time helping orphan girls with cleft palates in China. This was especially rewarding and meaningful. Her caring for others did not stop at her passing for she has donated a part of herself to the research and cure for other Alzheimer victims.
Trudy is survived by her devoted husband, Gary Kanter of Cumberland Foreside; her daughters, Karen Tomah of Yarmouth and Kim Ramharter and her husband Nick of Portland; her five grandchildren, Gracey, Kyle, Makala, Joshua and Jordan; her great-grandson, Aksel; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Jessie who died in 2001; her mother who died when she was four, her father; and two brothers, Nick and Larry.
A celebration of Trudy's life will be held later this summer. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to view a video collage of Trudy's life and to share your condolences, memories and tributes with her family.
