George S. Davis, 62
LYMAN-- George S. Davis, 62, Fire Chief of Hollis, died unexpectedly Saturday June 23, 2012, at his residence.
He was born in Portland, a son of George C. and Romana N. McMillian Davis. George was a 1968 graduate of Greeley High School in Cumberland. While in High School, George became a Junior Member of the Cumberland Fire Department at the age of 15.
Following high school he served in the Army as a helicopter door gunner in Viet Nam.
After George's military service, he returned to Maine and began working at Dave Aster's Garage in Portland. His next position was with Motor Truck and Trailer Company.
In 1976, he married the former Denise M. Meehan at St. Dominic's Church in Portland.
Following his marriage George accepted a position with James Whiltsie Company. He later began working for Old Tavern Dairy in Yarmouth. During the early 1980's he accepted a position with Shaw's Super Market staying for 17 years. He also worked briefly at The Cedar's and at Anton Enterprises.
Following the family move to Lyman, George joined the Goodwin's Mills Fire and Rescue in July 1983. Here George rose thru the ranks of the department serving as Deputy Chief from 2002 until 2004. He received the Chief Coyle Meserve Outstanding Member of the Year Award in 2001 and was named an Honorary Member in 2004. He was also full time as a Fire Marshal in the Sanford Fire Department and a Maine State Fire Instructor.
In 2005 he was named Chief of the Hollis Fire and Rescue Department, a position, he currently held. He was a member and Past President of the York County Fire Chief's Association.
He was always a busy person who possessed many skills. He was a 'hands on person' who could do most anything mechanically.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Denise M. Davis of Lyman; a son Aaron J. Davis and his wife Ronny of Colbert, Wash.; a grandson Ronan K. Davis of Colbert, Wash.; sisters Linda Stackhouse and her husband Todd of Brunswick, Karen Welch and her husband Bill of South Portland, Catherine Scott and her husband Laurie of South Portland, Brenda Clark and her husband Robert of Scarborough, Pam Dugas of Yarmouth, Kim Connell of Yarmouth, brothers Michael C. Davis of Westbrook, Carl Dugas and his wife Melinda of North Yarmouth; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m. (Fire and Rescue personal are encouraged to visit from 6 to 7:30 p.m.) Tuesday June 26, 2012 at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Church, corner of Broadway and Cottage Roads, South Portland. Fire and Rescue Personal Funeral Rites will be part of George's service. On line condolences may be sent to George's family at www.ctcrawford.com.
