PORTLAND -- Stuart Allen Reed, 75, died peacefully at his home in Portland on Nov. 23, 2012, with beloved family at his side. He was born in South Paris, ME on Dec. 29, 1936. He attended schools in New York and from the age of 16 worked consistently in the hospitality industry, becoming General Manager of the Hotel Margaret in Brooklyn, NY during his 25 year tenure. Upon moving to Portland he was employed at the Eastland Dunfey Hotel and then the Quality Inn/Friendship in South Portland. In 1982 he began working at the Portland House, becoming Manager in 1988.
In his subsequent semi retirement, Stuart truly hit his stride with employment at Portland's Downtown District, where he served as the PDD Summer Guides Supervisor, shepherding his much younger charges with his special combination of kindness and demanding standards. In 2007 the City issued a proclamation honoring Stuart ('Mr. Downtown') for his long service as a 'true goodwill ambassador for our community' in 'promoting all things Portland'. Stuart volunteered throughout the community and had a longstanding commitment to the First Free Methodist Church on Munjoy Hill, whose congregation became his spiritual family, and where he served faithfully and energetically in as many capacities as he could manage, until failing health recently forced him to slow down.
Stuart was predeceased by his father, Willard B. Reed, his mother, Iva B. (Sprague) Reed; and his wife, Susanne E. Reed. He is survived by his daughter, Donna M. Reed and his grandson, Ryan Reed Nichols, both of Cornish, ME; and his sister Marlene McDermott and her husband Dennis of Sun City Center, Fla. Stuart will be remembered fondly and with special gratitude by his long-time friend Bill Richardson. 'Uncle' will always hold a special place in the hearts of Keith Harvey, his wife Lora and daughter Katelyn, all of Portland.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sarah Ketchum, Dr. Karl Miller, and the folks at Mercy Hospital and VNA Home Health & Hospice for their tender care.
A celebration of Stuart's life of giving will be held on his birthday, Dec. 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Free Methodist Church, 140 Congress Street, Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to:
