Steven O. Swann, 68
SWAN'S ISLAND - Steven Oliver Swann, "Swanney" "Capt. Swann", 68, died on May 7, 2018, at the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor of a brain tumor.
He was born Dec. 23, 1949, in Portland, the son of Oliver W. and Josephine L. (Nelson) Swann.
Steve graduated from Portland High School, class of 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, and served his country from 1968-1971.
He was an Airdale in the U.S. Navy, and trained in aviation school as a door gunner in the U.S. Army. After serving, Steve became an ABS with the U.S. Coast Guard, and received his certification as a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer.
Steve worked as an assistant engineer on the island coastal waterways with his father. He owned his own boat, and lobstered in the summer, and worked as a sanitation engineer at Cabbage Patch in Florida during the winter.
He was a member of the VFW American Legion Post #348 in Florida, a member of the Navy Seal Museum and HAL-S Seawolf Association, and a member of the Moose Lodge in Ellsworth. Steve had certifications as an advanced open-water diver and parachute jumpster/tandem instructor.
Steve loved to fish, hike and camp. He loved lobstering on his boat, and to travel, and he bicycled from Maine to Florida.
He was an adventurer and sailed his nine-foot sailboat from Swan's Island to Old Orchard Beach. He was independent and a survivor. He was a very caring man with a generous heart and grandiose character.
He is survived by his mother, Josephine L.
