WESTBROOK - Santa Maria "Cindy" Di Donato passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Springbrook Center in Westbrook. Cindy was born on Jan. 1, 1922, in Portland, to Rocco and Brigida Nicolai Di Donato. She grew up in Portland and graduated from Portland High School in 1940. Cindy worked as a bookkeeper at the Harris Company for many years and later worked for H.P. Hood and Sons.
Cindy was predeceased by her mother, father; and her three brothers, Joseph, Dominic, and an infant brother, and her dear cousin Liz (Betty) Senechal. She is survived by her niece, Susan Linda Di Donato Royles of Alexandria, Va., her nephew Thomas J. Di Donato of Portland; and her beloved cousin, Mary Rush of Westbrook. Her survivors also include many grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins throughout the country.
Cindy was dearly loved by all. While she never had any children of her own, she rejoiced in the births and the upbringing of her family and friends' children. She was a godmother to many of them. Cindy was a source of love to her nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her dream of visiting her parents' homeland was realized when she traveled to Lettomanopello, Italy. She enjoyed meeting her Italian aunts and cousins for the first time.
As a young woman, Cindy loved to go to dances around Portland with her girlfriends, where they would dance and sing and party well into the night. She loved the music of crooners of the late 40's, especially Perry Como. She was the epitome of style and loved to shop for the latest fashions, never hesitating to scoop up a bargain. Cindy also embraced a healthy lifestyle at a young age and always reminded everyone to eat their fruit and vegetables and get plenty of exercise. These habits undoubtedly contributed to her long 95-year life.
Cindy was a devout Catholic and a lifelong parishioner of Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Portland. She volunteered at the church and served as the parish bookkeeper for many decades.
Visiting hours will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on March 22 at Jones, Rich & Barnes, at 199 Woodford St., Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 a.m. on March 23 at Jones, Rich & Barnes followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 72 Federal St. in Portland. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
