Roy F. Lowe, 79
NEW GLOUCESTER -- Roy F. Lowe, 79, of New Gloucester, passed away on Nov. 6, 2012, at Clover Manor surrounded by his loving family and several wonderful, compassionate staff members.
Roy was born on Dec. 7, 1932, to Elsie G. and Edward C. Lowe. He was married to Edith Thurlow on June 6, 1953. Roy was employed by Central Maine Power and Singer Business Machines until his retirement in 1982. He also served in the Naval Reserve from 1955-1959.
During his retirement, Roy volunteered for over 20 years as a patient representative in the Central Maine Medical Center Cardiac Care Unit and received the Larry Johnson Award in 1993 for his service, an honor that is normally reserved for healthcare professionals. He was also an avid participant in civic activities, serving as a moderator of New Gloucester town meetings for 25 years.
Additionally, Roy was a past Master Mason of the Cumberland Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons in New Gloucester.
Roy lived a fulfilling life and was widely known as a gifted woodworker, bringing joy to hundreds of children with his beautifully crafted rocking horses. Roy also had a great interest in outdoor activities, being awarded lifetime membership in the Royal River Riders snowmobile club in New Gloucester. He enjoyed camping, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to special memories of camping and creating projects in the basement, his grandchildren will always remember him for his humor, his wit, and his generosity.
Roy was predeceased by his parents; his wife Edith; and his brother John. He is survived by his brother Edward; his three children, Randy and his wife Betty, Valerie and her partner Bob, and Scott and his wife Nancy; six grandchildren, Heather, Michelle, Travis, Christopher, Benjamin, and Jonathan; and three great-grandchildren, Keller, Sage, and Isaac.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Rd., Gray. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Congregational-Christian Church, United Church of Christ of New Gloucester, 19 Gloucester Hill Rd., New Gloucester.
