SACO - Richard P. Murray Sr., 86, of Saco, passed away on Monday evening, Oct. 9, 2017, at Seal Rock Health-care, in Saco.
He was born in Biddeford on March 20, 1931, the son of Robert and Irene (Blake) Murray. He was educated at Thornton Academy.
He was a member of the National Guard, fighting the great fire in 1947.
Earlier, Richard was employed by Coca Cola for many years. In 1969, he took over as public works director for the City of Saco for 12 years.
Richard was the Saco Recreation Director for several years and served on the Saco City Council for two terms. He was the founder of Babe Ruth Baseball and co-founder of Maremont Little League in Saco.
His hobbies included hunting, bowling and table tennis, which included placing runner up in the State of Maine Table Tennis doubles championships. He was his sons' number one fan in broomball and never missed a sporting event for his children and grandchildren. He liked going to Scarborough Downs, but nothing compared to spending time with his family and friends. The family cherishes many special memories of their times spent together.
Richard had a passion for roses and people. He loved to grow roses in his garden and hand them out to his acquaintances to brighten their day.
He was predeceased by one brother, Robert Murray Jr.; and two sisters, Althea Parent and Catherine Redevske.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Grace; four children, Priscilla M. Hadiaris, and her husband Charles; Pamela L. Senay, and her husband Richard; Richard P. Murray Jr., and his wife Kathryn; and Douglas S. Murray, and his wife Christine; and five grandsons and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Albert Murray, and his wife Carmen; one sister, Elsie Boudrea, and her husband Harold; and several nieces and nephews.
